What's New in Stevengraph-SilksThe Home of Stevens, Grant and Other Victorian Silk weavers |
Who made these silks? |
As well as the records for identified weavers, there are a number of images that have not been identified to specific makers. I have included many of these in a seperate section. Several have already been identified, and recorded accordingly, whilst others have been identified as of foreign manufacture and removed. Can you help identify who made any of the remaining ones? Here are the details of the silk bookmarks, postcards and pictures so far included. Can you help?

Grant Portraits | Grant included the title " JUBILEE TROPHY " in the advertisements printed on the back of multiple portrait silks. This title has never been seen printed anywhere, and it is more than likely to be a promotional title, rather than actual. The Stevengraph Collectors Association reproduced a picture of a previously un-known Grant portrait of Victoria. In my own records, I have for many years had an image of an unknwon loose silk, which turned out to be the same portrait. On very close comparison between the loose silk, the mounted portrait and the Grant advertisement wording, it would seem this previously unrecorded silk is actually the JUBILEE TROPHY portrait, and is recoded as such: go286 - Jubilee Trophy - Her Majesty Queen Victoria portrait, the Royal Arms, emblems etc (excellent quality image) The following is a new image added for the first time to the title already recorded:

Grant Postcards | Possibly a novelty: It has long been suspected that Grant sold his unmounted silks to third parties, for them to mount in their own cards. This new addition to the catalogue is of the Grant Queen Victoria portrait silk mounted in a continental postcard frame. Silk postcards were not permitted in the UK postal system during Victoria's reign, so this card was intended exclusively for the foreign market:- gc2 - Queen Victoria (continental card mount) (excellent quality image) And the following are also new titles recorded for the first time:
Grant Rosettes & Other Silk Items | The following rosette title is a new addition to the catalogue: gr145 - Rosette - Coronation June 26, 1902 (Edward VII & Alexandra) (excellent quality image) Graham Parker has sent me an image of a loose silk of Queen Victoria as a young women, and this is the first time this ribbon has been recorded
