What's New in Stevengraph-Silks

The Home of Stevens, Grant and Other Victorian Silk weavers

Who made these silks? A section has been added to this site, in which I include images of silks that seem to be from the Victorian period or early 1900's, but we do not know who made them. Can you help identify who made them? {last updated 11 January 2017}
There is a bookmark titled "Exposition Universelle d 'Anvers en 1894"
A coronation bookmark or favour with His Majesty King George V and Queen Mary
A bookmark or favour with Disraeli, made by L & S, and
Here is the details of all the silks we cannot identify. Can you help?

The title "Souvenir of the discovery of America / Landing of Columbus Oct 12th 1492 / Columbus / The Santa Maria" (sb1844) has been recorded for some time, but with a doubt it was a genuine Stevens silk.
The following new addition to the catalogue is an identical silk, except that the letter " L " has been omitted from the " COLUMBUS " name. It seems probably that this new addition was the original, and when the error was found, changed to the version already recorded.
Of importance too is that this new addition is still attached to the stiff backing paper, with STEVENS name printed. It is hence a genuine Stevens silk bookmark, and by implication the previously recorded version is now confirmed as a genuine Stevens:
sb1845 - Souvenir of the discovery of America / Landing of Coumbus (sic) Oct 12th 1492 / Columbus / The Santa Maria (excellent quality image)

The following are new images to go with titles already recorded in the Stevens bookmark catalogue:

With the following recording additional images added to suppliment previously recorded images:

Grant postcards The following are the new titles, together with images, recorded for the first time in the Grant postcard catalogue:

gc860-cc - With Best Wishes for a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year (as undated Christmas card) (excellent quality image)

The postcard title "Auld Lang Syne" has been recorded with the more usual version of the words of the chorus recorded with the music. There is now recorded for the first time the version with the words of the verse and chorus together, followed by all the music:
gc739 - Auld lang syne - with words together and music (excellent quality image)

The "Home, Sweet Home" postcard is very common, and was one of the first to be recorded on this site. On very close inspection however, I now realise that there is actually an error in the very first cards to be issued, and as such, new records are now created.
There are basically two version of "Home, Sweet Home". The first has the words of the verse first, then the music of the verse, followed by the words of the chorus and finally the music of the chorus. The second version has the words of the verse and chorus together, followed by the music of the verse and chorus together.
It is now realised that the very first issues of these basic two designs both have an error in the music of the chorus. The earliest designs have, in the 4th bar of the chorus music, a note " G " as the first note. The correct music, and all subsequent issues of the silk postcard, should have a note " A " instead.
All variations of these postcards are now recorded in the catalogue, as comparisons of the two basic designs:
gc816 - Home Sweet Home - with words and music (chorus separated) (excellent quality image)
gc818 - Home Sweet Home - with words together and music (excellent quality image)

The following are new images added for the first time to existing titles already recorded:
gc388 - RMS Saxonia (USA & Irish flags) (excellent quality image)
gc392-fb - British and Irish flags (Souvenir of the Franco-British Exhibition, 1908 (excellent quality image)
gc552 - Marle Hall, Llandudno (excellent quality image)
gc730-cc - All Xmas Joys be thine, Good wishes for the New Year (as undated Christmas Card) (excellent quality image)

For quite some time, there has been recorded two postcards with Coats of Arms, both attributed to Stevens. With the assistance of Mark Cottrill's book on Grant postcards, it is now realised these two have been mis-categorised. Both cards are now correctly recorded as Grant postcards, against titles already recorded:
gc648 - Coventry (Coat of Arms) (reasonable quality image)
gc651 - (Coat of Arms / Forward) - no title (reasonable quality image)

The following are improved quality images to replace existing ones already recorded in the Grant postcard catalogue:
gc60 - H.R.H. Princess of Wales (reg no. 369619 woven on silk) (excellent quality image)

gc576 - Shakespeare's birthplace (excellent quality image)
gc618 - Tower Bridge (without woven title) (excellent quality image)
gc850 - There's gladness in remembrance - Greetings With Best Wishes (excellent quality image)

19 May 2017 Stevens HATS card Following on from the extensive update of the Stevens Hands Across the Sea postcards, there has ensued a discussion about the Great Britain/Merchant Navy silk. In essence, having a flag for the Merchant Navy made no sense, and also, with the addition of the crest, this flag is not a true Merchant Navy flag.
John High, in his unpublished work, noted that this flag was actually a representation of the Canadian flag after the first World War. There has also been support for this view during the discussions.
Whilst I cannot find an exact match of this flag recorded for the various Canadian flags, nevertheless, the logic of it being the Canadian flag is sufficiently strong for this web site to record it as such:
Hence, within the Stevens Hands Across the Sea catalogue, the previously recorded Great Britain/Merchant Navy HATS cards have now been redefined as Great Britain/Canadian Hands Across the Sea cards.

Stevens Bookmarks The following are new titles, together with images, not previously recorded in the Stevens bookmark catalogue:
sb490 - CE / Convention / Bristol 1896 (excellent quality image)

A delegates ribbon titled " Christ and Comradeship " has been long recorded on this site. A new addition is the same ribbon, but this time it would appear to be for the National Council delegate:
sb1478 - NATL COUNCIL / Christ and Comradeship (excellent quality image)

The title " To my cousin " has long been recorded on this site.
A new bookmark with the same title has now been found, necessitating the change of the previously recorded title to now read:
sb2253 - To my cousin / Peace be around thee (excellent quality image)
The title and image newly recorded in the catalogue is:
sb2252 - To my cousin / (flowers) / I dont forget (excellent quality image)

The title Dinah consoling Hetty in prison has long been recorded on this site. A new variant of this title is now added to the Stevens bookmark catalogue. The two bookmarks are almost identical - the difference being that the new addition has the name " FJ Williamson Esq. " added below the words of the central picture:
sb610 - Dinah consoling Hetty in prison (FJ Williamson Esq. on picture) (excellent quality image)

The title In Commemoration of the Testimonial to Sir Moses Montefiore. . . / (Hebrew writing) / Pray for the Peace has long been recorded on this site. A new variant of this title is now added to the Stevens bookmark catalogue. The two bookmarks are almost identical - the difference being that the new addition has the Hebrew writing at the end of the bookmark, whilst the previous version had it in the middle:
sb1109 - In Commemoration of the Testimonial to Sir Moses Montefiore. . . / Pray for the Peace / (Hebrew writing) (excellent quality image)

The following are new images to go with titles already recorded in the Stevens bookmark catalogue:

27 March 2017 Postcards Regular visitors to this page will know that it is several years since I addressed the SHIP and HANDS ACROSS THE SEA postcards.
This is in part because I was not happy with the Stevens and Grant catalogues. I have now looked at these cards, and importantly, with the invaluable guidance of Mark Cottrill, the Stevengraph Collectors Association President, corrected the mis-categorisation of several titles.
I have also decided to simplify the catalogues, without of course reducing the amount of information available.

The summarised outcome is:-
a) Move several titles FROM the STEVENS catalogue TO the GRANT catalogue.
b) ADD the previously unrecorded Great Britain/Australia flag combination to the Hands Across The Sea catalogue.
c) SPLIT the GRANT catalogue by card type, and ADD a number of previously unrecorded titles.

Stevens Ship card Whilst in general the STEVENS SHIP postcard catalogue was accurate, there had been recorded eight titles that did not seem correct. I now realise that these were all in fact GRANT postcards and have been moved.

A small number of new titles have also been added.
I have also added images to most of the titles; 92.7% of the recorded titles to be precise, so this is now very much comprehensive. Some images are new to the site whilst others are improved quality.

Stevens HATS card Chris Radley, writing in the 1985 RF Picture Postcard Catalogue publication mentions that STEVENS might have produced Experimental cards in Australia, one of which was a HANDS ACROSS THE SEA card with Great Britain and Australian flags.

This site now records three silk postcards with the GB / Australian flags, being SS Persic, SS Runic and a card with no ships name.
None of these card has the " HANDS ACROSS THE SEA " printed above the silk panel, and the embossed border round the silk panel of the two named ships is the maple leaf design used sparingly by Stevens.
In all three silks, the man's hand has five fingers visible, with the thumb being behind. There is recorded one Stevens silk with the same six finger & thumb hand, and this is obviously very unusual.
Needless to say, both the ship titles and combination of flags and hands are new additions.

John High, in his unpublished work, noted that he had two HATS postcards in his collection comprising a Stevens silk mounted in a Grant card. I have no idea how or why this should have happened, although out of interest I too have a third such card recorded, RMS Baltic, and is recorded as an error.
I mention this as the un-named ship GB / Australian HATS similarly looks to be a Stevens silk in a Grant card.

As with the ships, the HANDS ACROSS THE SEA catalogue has been fully updated, with new titles added and mis-categorised titles moved to Grant.
Of the 470 combinations of ship names, flags and hands, this site currently has 373 images, being 79.4%.

Grant postcards Grant postcards are very easy to identify, as they all have distinctive PRINTED cards. Not any more!!

A new image to this site is RMS CARONIA; a title long recorded but with no image. The important point with this ship is that there is an embossed pattern round the silk opening (in like manner to Stevens cards), but with Grant's name printed on the card.
The essential feature is an embossed anchor in each of the four corners. There are variations for the Irish cards, which have a shamrock design, and the Scottish cards, which have the thistle instead of the anchor.
Both SHIP cards and HANDS ACROSS THE SEA cards have this embossed design, and in order to record these properly, separate categories have been created in the Grant catalogue.

As recorded in the Bibliography, Mark Cottrill, the Chairman of the Stevengraph Collectors Association produced a picture book of the Grant silks. I have been fortunate to now have a copy of that book, and in both working through it, and discussing the various cards with Mark, it is he who directed me to a very important feature of these "anchor embossed" cards. Unlike Stevens cards which just have the embossing round the silk, these Grant cards also have a second embossed rectangle which encloses the whole central pattern.

It is this unique embossed rectangle feature of Grant cards which enabled Mark to also identify yet a third group of Grant Ship postcards. The inner embossing on this final group comprise a flower design with 8-six petal and 4-five petal flowers. All these cards are now recorded, both SHIPS and HANDS ACROSS THE SEA, and again, in their own group.

29 November 2016 Alpha Postcards The existing catalogue of Alpha silk postcards was based upon the excellent work produced by the late John High. John had recorded some 149 different titles. Over the years however I have accumulated many images of postcards not recorded by John. These new images, and of course titles, will be added in due course, although in order to make room for these new titles, the existing catalogue has been completely renumbered.
The following are better quality images to replace existing ones already recorded in the catalogue:

Stevens Bookmarks The following are new titles, together with images, not previously recorded in the Stevens bookmark catalogue:
Since 2007, the title: The power of love (with bible reference) {being sb2096 on this site} has been recorded. A new bookmark has now been added to the Stevens catalogue; identical in every respect, except that this new addition does not have the reference to the bible verse:
sb2097 - The power of love (no bible reference) (excellent quality image)

Since 2002, the title: To a dear friend {being sb2204 on this site} has been recorded. A new bookmark has now been added to the Stevens catalogue; identical in every respect, except that this new addition has stylised flowers at the pointed end, instead of realistic flowers of the previously recorded title:
sb2205 - To a dear friend (stylised flowers at pointed end) (excellent quality image)

The following are new images to go with titles already recorded in the Stevens bookmark catalogue:

The following is also a replacement image, although it has been associated with a stiff backing paper, the wording and layout of which links to JJ Mannion, and that is now reflected in the wording of the title:
sb1878 - (shield & crossed flags) / Souvenir woven in The Worlds Columbian Exposition Chicago 1893 / (building) / Machinery Hall / (train) - (no Stevens credit: Probably JJ Mannion) (excellent quality image)

Stevens Portraits The following are new images to go with previously recorded titles in the Stevens portrait catalogue. They are also important additions, as the printed back labels are identical to the printing on the stiff backing paper of a bookmark. This bookmark though has the woven name of JJ Mannion, thereby reinforcing the long held believe of a close association between Mannion and Stevens:
so198 - Cleveland, Mr. (excellent quality image)
so209 - Cleveland, Mrs (without signature) (excellent quality image)
