What's New in Stevengraph-Silks

The Home of Stevens, Grant and Other Victorian Silk weavers

Who made these silks? A section has been added to this site, in which I include images of silks that seem to be from the Victorian period or early 1900's, but we do not know who made them.
Can you help identify who made them?
Two have already been identified and moved to the requisite catalogue. Two however still remain . . .{last updated 12 November 2018}
There is a bookmark titled "Exposition Universelle d 'Anvers en 1894"
A coronation bookmark or favour with His Majesty King George V and Queen Mary
Here is the details of all the silks we cannot identify. Can you help?

5 February 2019 Welch & Lenton Jenni Redman was continued her long standing and very welcome support with an image of the following bookmark, the title of which had not previously been recorded. This is now added for the first time:
owe137 - A Merry Christmas to you / (globe with words: Peace on earth goodwill to men) / Here's merry Christmas come (excellent quality image)

Stevens Bookmarks Jenni has also provided my with the following seven quality images. The first of which is an image to go with a title not previously recorded which is hence new to this catalogue. The next five are new images to go for the first time with existing titles. The final is an additional image to enhance the quality of other previously recorded images:
sb2054 - The Lord is my shepherd / I shall not want (on scroll on floral ground) (excellent quality image)

sb542 - Collect (full size bookmark) (excellent quality image)
sb1156 - Learn to do well (freyed end narrow lengthways ribbon) (good quality image)
sb1584 - Pray without ceasing (freyed end narrow lengthways ribbon) (excellent quality image)
sb2132 - The Rt. Revd. Lord Bishop of Oxford, D.D., F.R.C.S. &c &c (excellent quality image)
sb2456 - When thou hearest, Forgive / God of pity (excellent quality image)

sb1026 - I know that my redeemer liveth (excellent quality image)

Jenni has also made available the following excellent quality images. These are all of bible bookmarks or ribbons, and whilst none has any weavers name recorded, it is nevertheless considered they are all of Stevens manufacture. Several of the titles have been traced back to original Stevens Advertisements of the 1869-1870 period:
The first pair are new titles, not previously recorded in this catalogue:

sb506 - Chants (frayed end narrow ribbon joined with Hymns) (excellent quality image)
sb1006 - Hymns (frayed end narrow ribbon joined with Chants) (excellent quality image)
The next three, similarly had not previously been recorded:
sb680 - Faith (pointed, narrow ribbon joined with Hope and Charity) (excellent quality image)
sb990 - Hope (pointed, narrow ribbon joined with Faith and Charity) (excellent quality image)
sb510 - Charity (pointed, narrow ribbon joined with Faith and Hope) (excellent quality image)
Of the next four, the first and last are new titles, added for the first time, whilst titles two and three had been recorded, although this is the first time images have been available:
sb682 - Faith Hope And Charity (pointed, narrow ribbon joined with others) (excellent quality image)
sb1516 - No Cross No Crown (pointed, narrow ribbon joined with others) (excellent quality image)
sb1568 - Overcome evil with good (narrow pointed end joined with others) (excellent quality image)
sb2162 - The Truth Shall Make Us Free (pointed, narrow ribbon joined with others) (excellent quality image)
And finally, Jenni has made available the next four images, in different colours to those previously recorded, and also with ornaments attached to the ends of each bookmark. It would appear that Stevens advertised these in the 1869-1870 catalogue:
sb354 - All Thy Works Praise Thee O Lord (narrow pointed end joined with others) (excellent quality image)
sb578 - Create in me a clean heart O God (narrow pointed end joined with others) (excellent quality image)
sb1578 - Praise the Lord for He is good (narrow pointed end joined with others) (excellent quality image)
sb1580 - Praise waiteth for thee O God (narrow pointed end joined with others) (excellent quality image)

  J. & J. Cash As mentioned before, the recording of J & J CASH'S titles is new and there will undoubtedly be many more updates before the catalogue could be considered as comprehensive.
In this latest update, the only additions have been made to the Pictures, with a total of 164 new titles being added.
The statistics are now, 189 Picture titles (previously: 25); 95 Bookmark titles; and 101 Greeting Card titles, a grand total of 385 (previously: 226) titles. A total of 374 of these titles are supported with images.

19 December 2018 Welch & Lenton Stephen Mottershead, Great Britain has very kindly given me an excellent quality image of a previously unrecorded bookmark. This is now added for the first time:
owe628 - THE PET LAMB / My own pet lamb . . (excellent quality image)

  J. & J. Cash With the enormity of the task, I decided at the outset of this site (some 18 years ago) to concentrate on Stevens and Grant, together with the other smaller, but nevertheless influential weavers such as Welch & Lenton, Caldicott etc.. The recording of CASH'S titles would be delayed until later.
" Later " has now arrived . . .
A new catalogue has been opened to record J. & J. CASH woven titles for all their bookmarks, pictures, cards and wooden boxes.
The earliest record of CASH is in 1846, and as such they are of equal importance as Stevens and Grant. Indeed the earliest bookmark with their woven name is circa. 1862 - contemporary with Stevens first bookmark.
CASH's have been prolific in the number of items produced, and I make no pretence in the length of time it will take to record even a small part of their total output. For this reason, catalogue numbers are not allocated, only file reference numbers, which are allocated sequentially as each new title is added.
This initial catalogue records 25 Picture titles; 95 Bookmark titles; and 101 Greeting Card titles, a grand total of 226 titles and images.
Most of these initial recorded titles are derived from CASH'S new web site. The Management of CASH'S (UK) has very kindly given me permission to use the images from their web site as support to my records.
Your contributions though of titles and images is of course welcome.

Brocklehurst Whiston For some years this site has recorded all known titles of Brocklehurst-Whiston woven pictures, and with the significant donations of images by Mary Dodd, all titles were supported with images. This record though ignored the printed silk pictures also made by BWA, and this is now rectified.
The BWA catalogue has now been updated to record the eleven printed silk titles, five of which are supported by images. It is worth noting the earliest three of these titles were originally sold under the LANGLEY PRINTS LTD manufacturers name.

Other Weavers Over the last 18 years I have come across other British weavers who seem to have made just one, or a very small number of pictures or bookmarks. Some of these weavers probably date back to Victorian times, whilst others date to the 1980's or 1990's.
As time now permits, I have added them all to this site . . .

5 September 2018 Mulloney & Johnson From the start of this web site, there has been recorded three Shakespeare silks with scalloped edges, held together with a badge. Recently, similar silks have been found, the differences being that the new ones have a double leaf pattern at the top of the silk (vis a circular design) and the outer border is plain (vis an ornate circular pattern). There is no doubt these new ones are of Mulloney & Johnson manufacture, and are added to their catalogue, together with an image of the badge, which is identical to the one previously recorded:
omu14 - Similar Tercentenary Badge comprising:- (excellent quality image)
omu16 - silk with plain border design, and words 'Tercentenary / Commemorated April 23 1864' (excellent quality image)
omu17 - silk with plain border design, words 'Died April 23 / Stratford on Avon, 1616' (excellent quality image)
omu18 - silk with plain border design words 'Birthplace, born April 23rd, 1564' (excellent quality image)

It is known that Mulloney & Johnson did not weave their name onto the silks they made. This makes it very difficult to record them properly. In an early edition of the BOOKMARK SOCIETY NEWSLETTER , there is a reference to the following as possibly of M & J manufacture:
omu88 - Truly this Man was the Son of God - possibly not M&J (excellent quality image)

Mellor Bros. In addition to the 1896 bookmark, the following 1975 woven calander has been added, as it is assumed this ribbon belongs to the same company:
ome6 - Bookmark or ribbon: 1975 Calendar (excellent quality image)

Morgan & Scott There had previously been recorded only two titles for this weaver, with no images. A number of new titles have been identified, and images now for all the titles, resulting in a complete revamp of the MORGAN & SCOTT catalogue.

Marshall, Morgan & Scott It had previously been assumed that at some stage MORGAN & SCOTT Ltd had became MARSHALL, MORGAN & SCOTT Ltd. With the addition of images for both Morgan & Scott and Marshall, Morgan & Scott it is clear the subjects of both and designs are so different as to conclude they were separate weavers.
MARSHALL, MORGAN & SCOTT Ltd has now been recorded as a new weaver for this web site.

It is worth noting that there is a degree of overlap with titles, although not designs, between MARSHALL, MORGAN & SCOTT Ltd, E. K. and G. J. C. to the extent that it is possible there was some association between these three.

  E. K., London This is a new weaver's name added to this web site for the first time.
All the recorded titles are of verses quoted from the Bible, and many have the words " THE EMMANUEL SERIES " woven on the top turn-over.
Below is another new weaver, G. J. C., London and they too have " THE EMMANUEL SERIES " woven on the reverse of most of their titles.
Several titles, although not the designs, of this weaver, of Marshall, Morgan & Scott and of G. J. C. bookmarks are the same verses quoted from the Bible, to the extent that it is possible there was some association between these three weavers.

  G. J. C., London This is another new weaver's name added to this web site for the first time.
Most of the recorded titles are of verses quoted from the Bible, and many have the words " THE EMMANUEL SERIES " woven on the top turn-over.
Above is another new weaver, E. K., London and they too have " THE EMMANUEL SERIES " woven on the reverse of most of their titles.
Several titles, although not the designs, of this weaver, of Marshall, Morgan & Scott and of E. K. bookmarks are the same verses quoted from the Bible, to the extent that it is possible there was some association between these three weavers.

Bollans Bookmarks Latest updates are recorded below, and in addition, there has been a substantial realignment of this catalogue. When originally creating this web site, in the absence of any other information, I put together my own version based upon the BOLLANS advertisements. This was subsequently updated with JOHN HIGH's unpublished works. The limitation of my first attempt at a catalogue was the inclusion of generic descriptions from the BOLLANS adverts which could never be associated with specific titles. I have now corrected this with the elimination of all the unidentified generic titles. This has resulted in 18 previously recorded catalogue numbers being removed as it is believed the actual titles are now recorded elsewhere in the BOLLANS catalogue.

The following are new titles not previously recorded, and hence recorded for the first time, together with supporting images:

Stevens Portraits Both Sprake and Godden initially recorded the titles of two un-mounted portrait silks as being those of Hermine, Princess of Schonaich-Carolath. Decaded ago it was established that this identification was incorrect, and these portraits have been recorded simply as " Un-known Ladies ". Now, after extensive research by members of the Stevengraph Collectors Association, original photographs with printed names have been discovered that are almost identical to the silk portraits. As a consequence, both these two portrait silks have now been identified as Augusta Victoria, wife of Wilhelm II of Germany:
so70 - Augusta Victoria (body facing forward, head facing half left) (excellent quality image)
so71 - Augusta Victoria (body facing half right, head facing half left) (excellent quality image)

The following is a new title added to the Stevens silk portrait catalogue, although unfortunately there is currently no image to go with that title:
so2 - Coronation ('Queen Alexandra' and 'King Edward VII' woven on ribbon above portraits)

And the following are other new titles and images added for the first time to the Stevens catalogue:
so43 - Archer, The Late Fred (Unknown owners colours:- primrose body, cream sleeves & cap, with signature) (reasonable quality image)
so297 - Gladstone, Rt. Hon. W.E., M.P. (facing half right, with wild rose) (excellent quality image)
so381 - Maria mit Jesukind (good quality image)
so490 - Stephenson, Georg (German language version) (excellent quality image)

Whilst the following is a new improved image to replace the existing portrait recorded in the Stevens catalogue:
so25 - Archer, The Late Fred (Lord Falmouth colours:- black body, white sleeves, red cap, no signature) (excellent quality image)
