Comments:

by Geoffrey Godden:
THE ROYAL JUBILEE ALBUM
This album was listed on the 1887 back-labels in the following terms:-

Containing splendid portraits of the Queen, and leading Statesmen - 6 portraits in all. These are tastefully designed, and are rich in appearance.

An example of this rare album is in the collection of Mr. B.W. Blades, having a cover of brown imitation leather with gilt wording: ' The Jubilee Album of the Queen and leading British Statesmen. Woven in Pure Silk. W.H. Grant, Manufacturer, Coventry & New York.' There is a small woven-silk oval portrait of Queen Victoria in the top left-hand corner.
The first page with a portrait of Queen Victoria, and the leading statesmen depicted in silk are: the Late Earl of Beaconsfield, Lord Randolph Churchill, the Marquis of Salisbury and the Right Hon. W.E. Gladstone.

Godden also shows a picture of this book on page 424 (plate 289) in his book "Stevengraphs and other Victorian silk pictures", and says,

In the Jubilee year of 1887, Grant issued ' The Royal Jubilee Album at three shillings, containing splendid portraits of the Queen and leading Statesmen, six portraits in all, these are tastefully designed and are rich in appearance.' A double page from such an album in the collection of Mr. B. W. Blades is reproduced in plate 289.

Other comments:
This rare book was issued to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887, and would have had two small ribbons to pass through the holes on front and back covers, to hold the book closed.
It contained five full size portraits, plus a small oval woven silk portrait on the front cover.
The five individual portraits are:

Her Majesty Queen Victoria [go293 on this site]
The Marquis of Salisbury, K.G. [go270 on this site]
Right Hon. W.E. Gladstone, M.P. [go197 on this site]
Lord Randolph Churchill, M.P. [go161 on this site] and
The Late Earl of Beaconsfield [go81 on this site]

Each of these five portraits are reproduced from the normal sized versions, as listed below. The difference being that the credit " W.H GRANT, Manufacturer, Foleshill, Coventry " and " Woven in pure silk " is printed below the silk on these normal sized portraits, but is missing from the JUBILEE ALBUM silks.

Her Majesty Queen Victoria [go292 on this site]
The Marquis of Salisbury, K.G. [go269 on this site]
Right Hon. W.E. Gladstone, M.P. [go196 on this site]
Lord Randolph Churchill, M.P. [go160 on this site] and
The Late Earl of Beaconsfield [go80 on this site]
