by Geoffrey Godden:
This Grant silk portrait was issued in 1887 and is included in the Jubilee Album, being then also sold on its own.
As with other Grant portraits, it was issued in coloured silks at 6d and also in black and white, of smaller size at 3d (§1023a) [being go272 on this site].
An outline of the Marquis of Salisbury's career is given on the Stevens example [so452 on this site].
Other comments:
The Jubilee Album is shown on this site as go36, and the portrait above of The Marquis of Salisbury is contained within that album.
Godden above refers to this portrait being issued in 1887. Further research has now established there are actually two versions.
Both have the same silk portrait, but one [go269 on this site] is in a larger card mount, as it includes the usual Grant credit printed on the matt below the silk.
The second version [above] is mounted in a smaller card mount, and is the version included in the Jubilee Album. This version is smaller as the usual printed Grant credit has been omitted, thus enabling the card to fit into the overall Jubilee Album format.
