Little need be said here of George Washington (1732-99), whose life is equally well known both to English and American readers.
He was, of course, the first President of the United States of America and was of British stock, his great-grandfather having emigrated in 1657.

This standard portrait-size silk is extremely rare - although one would think that the subject would have proved popular, at least in the United States of America.
The title is listed only on label 23+34 of 1888, but some later examples have the special wording 'Woven in pure silk at World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago, 1893' printed on the card-mount (as above).

It should be noted that the main title - GEORGE WASHINGTON - is not usually printed on the card-mount. It is one of the very few untitled portrait silks.
