by Geoffrey Godden:
The Prince of Wales - who was to become King Edward VII - was born on 9 November 1841, the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
He was created Prince of Wales as an infant, on 4 December 1841.
After the death of his mother, Queen Victoria, the coronation of King Edward VII took place in August 1902.
He died on 6 May 1910.

Three versions of this subject are found.

150 - The first, very rare, shows the full-face portrait of the Prince, with two crossed flags woven below (see so528).

150a - A perhaps slightly later version is also occasionally found, where the Prince of Wales is shown facing slightly to the left - again with two crossed flags placed below (see image above).

150b - A third version does not include the two flags (see so536).

The title PRINCE OF WALES was first listed on label 22+17+2 - an example of which, in my own (i.e. Godden's) collection, is dated August 1887 - and specimens are affixed to type D card-mounts.
The title was first listed in a Stevens advertisement published in May 1887.
