The British pugilist. His belt is red, white and blue. The socks are found in either green, yellow, or black.

by Godden:
Jem Smith was born in 1863. As a youth, he was employed in a London timber-yard.
During his boxing career, he weighed fourteen stone (196 lbs - 88.9 kg).
In 1887, while 'Champion of England', Smith took on Jake Kilrain (see so 340) for the title of Champion of the World; but because darkness intervened, the fight was pronounced a draw.

The Stevengraph portrait of Jem Smith was first listed on label 23+34a of 1888 but the title was included in an advertisement published in December 1887.

Examples are found with type C mounts. Variations occur in the colour of Smith's socks, which may be yellow, green or black.
The back-label is often of story type.
