by Austin Sprake:
by Geoffrey Godden: The title he attributes is " Leopold of Bavaria ", and then produces the following description:- Prince Leopold of Bavaria was born in Munich in 1846. He entered the Bavarian army in 1861, became Field-Marshal in 1903 and commanded the 9th Army in the First World War. He died in 1930. However, in a later hand written correction to his book, Godden notes that these words relate to the son, whereas the father is the actual subject of the silk portrait. Godden also notes that the reference to plate 164 is actually to that of Tsar Alexander II, not Leopold. The corrected version should be:- Luitpold: Prinzregent Luitpold Karl Joseph Wilhelm Ludwig von Bayern. Born 12 March 1821. Died 12 December 1912. Regent of Bavaria from 1886 to 1912.
