William Gilbert Grace was born of a cricketing family at Downend, Gloucester, on 18 July 1848.
'W.G.' was endowed with a fine physique and stood well over six feet tall. For 36 years, from 1865, W. G. Grace was a prominent figure in first-class cricket - not only as a batsman but also in the field.
His records include 121 centuries. The great W.G. (these well-known initials being the only form of title on the Stevens card-mounts) died on 23 October 1915.

The Stevens silk of W. G. Grace shows the great man standing at the wicket, reputedly on the occasion of his century of centuries in 1895.

The full title DR. W. G. GRACE was first listed on label 31+29 of 1896.

This attractive Stevengraph is, strangely, rare. One would have thought that it would originally have been popular and therefore relatively common today. Examples are found on card-mounts of type C.
