by Geoffrey Godden:
George Frederick Ernest Albert, the second son of King Edward VII, was born in London on 3 June 1865. After a long and interesting naval career, he was created Duke of York in 1892 (see so612) and married Princess Victoria Mary (see so608) on 6 July 1893.
In November 1901 the Duke was created Prince of Wales (see so540), and on 6 May 1910 he succeeded to the British throne on the death of his father Edward VII.
The coronation took place at Westminster Abbey on 22 June 1911.
King George V died on 20 January 1936.

The rare, late Stevens silk (half length, full face) portrait was first listed on label 32+32 of c. 1910.
It shows the King standing in coronation regalia, wearing his crown.

QUEEN MARY (so384) was issued as a natural pair to GEORGE V.

Examples are normally mounted on type G card-mounts, with the late credit 'Woven in silk by Thomas Stevens (Coventry) Ltd.' The portrait is, however, also found in postcard form.
