Albert Frederick Augustus was born on 23 April 1828, the first son of King John of Saxony. He took a leading part in the Franco-Russian War, and after the armistice he was in command of the German Army of Occupation. On the death of his father, in October 1873, he succeeded to the throne of Saxony; and he died on 10 June 1902.

The portrait shown in plate 165 [of Godden's book], bottom left, probably represents King Albert of Saxony as a young man {note: this portrait has now been identified as that of Tsar Alexander III, not Albert.}. The image above shows him at a more advanced age.

The title was first listed on label 23+34b of c. 1888 and, although the subject would have had a very limited market in Great Britain, was continued on labels until at least 1910.
