by Godden:
The portrait of this famous Victorian jockey, who was champion jockey in 1872 and the Derby winner in 1882, is found in four variations.
The first two, issued in c. 1887, show Cannon in his own colours and in Lord Rosebery's respectively - these two versions being first listed on label 21+13+2, of 1887.
The title was included in an advertisement of May 1887.
Some varieties of the first two omit the woven signature 'Thomas Cannon' below the portrait.

Rarer, later, versions occur with Tom Cannon wearing the colours of Baron de Rothschild and of H. Crocker.

Examples are mounted on type C2 card-mounts.
