This landscape view of the gardens and exterior of the buildings containing the 1887 Manchester Jubilee Exhibition is one of the few local exhibition scenes to have been included in the standard printed back-labels.
The design was registered on 24 February 1887. The Exhibition was inaugurated by Queen Victoria - a fact that may account for the royal initials near the top of the card-mount. The title is included on labels 22+17+2, 23+26+2, 23+27+2 and 23+34. It was then discontinued, and it is reasonable to assume that this special dated subject was issued only during the duration of the Exhibition, which ran from 3 May to 10 November 1887.
Specimens are now very scarce and were probably woven and sold only at the Exhibition, where Thomas Stevens had, in the machinery section, a 'Jacquard Loom in Motion, for the manufacture of fancy silk goods. . . .'
Examples are affixed to type B4 mounts.
