It is not known how this bookmark is signed, and might not be of STEVENS manufacture.
A Stevens advertisement of 1869-1870 Retail Prices however record as catalogue number 12; " Best Small Chants & Hymns "; being two joined ribbons, and that matches the pair shown above. This site also records a number of similar narrow ribbons with frayed ends, and these are attributed to Stevens manufacture. The bookmark, HYMNS, is joined with CHANTS (recorded as sb506) These frayed end silk markers are joined at the top, either with tacking stitches (as the images above), or with similar material to the frayed bottom. |
