However, this bookmark records the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of the Leek Technical School. The later bookmark, obn12, marks the opening of the Technical School, and that has been identified as a Brough, Nicholson & Hall silk. The provinence can hence be established conclusively. The signature on this bookmark is that of Millicent Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, The Duchess of Sutherland (October 20, 1867 - August 20, 1955). At the time of her visit to Leek, and the date of this bookmark, she was married to Lord Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 4th Duke of Sutherland. |
