Tasmanian Devil (Sarcophilus harrisii)
The devil is commonly distributed throughout the island state and has at some time existed in areas of mainland Australia.
The devil is distinct from most other marsupials, due to its overall appearance and feeding habits.
They are very powerfully built, with large jaws, capable of devouring their prey - bones, skin and all.
Like their marsupial cousins, they carry their young in a pouch, for upto five months.
Couple these unusual feeding habits with the frightening "scream" that they can produce and then it is no wonder that the
early settlers named them "devils".
