by Geoffrey Godden:
A fine pair of silks were registered on 4 February 1901 under the registration numbers 369618 and 369619. These designs have the wording 'Australian Commonwealth' near the top, with single portraits of the Duke of York (to become George V in 1910) and the Duchess of York (Queen Mary) within ornate pillar-like surrounds. The Arms of Australia are woven below with the wording '1901. Inaugurated 1901. Advance Australia'. They were made to commemorate the royal visit to Australia, when the Duke and Duchess of York toured the Commonwealth in 1901, landing at Melbourne in May to open the first Parliament of the Commonwealth. The same portraits were also issued with the title 'H.R.H. Duke of Cornwall & York', and these also bear the registration number 369618. Other comments: |
