This fine portrait silk is one of the 'Empire Defenders' series and this general title appears printed on the card-mount, above the portrait. Woven below the portrait and the Union Jack are the words 'Defender of Ladysmith'.

George Stuart White, born in County Antrim, Ireland, in 1835, won the Victoria Cross in 1879 for gallantry in the Afghan War. He subsequently served in numerous campaigns and was in command in Natal during the South African War, defending Ladysmith from 2 November 1899 to 28 February 1900. He was made a Field-Marshal in 1903, and he died in 1912.

The Stevens firm did not produce this subject.
