Comments: | by Geoffrey Godden: George Stuart White, born in County Antrim, Ireland, in 1835, won the Victoria Cross in 1879 for gallantry in the Afghan War. He subsequently served in numerous campaigns and was in command in Natal during the South African War, defending Ladysmith from 2 November 1899 to 28 February 1900.
