Comments:

by Geoffrey Godden:
This was one of the earliest portrait silks, first issued woven in black and white late in 1885, then being priced at 6d (but, with similar small-sized portraits, later reduced to 3d). This portrait occurs facing either slightly left {that is, the image above} or slightly to the right {recorded as go152 on this site}.
An outline of this famous politician's career is given in the Stevens section, so188 and can be seen printed on the back-label.

§983a:   The portrait was also issued in a larger size, in coloured silks, priced at 2s in 1885 and 1886 but reduced to 6d each by 1887 {recorded as go160 on this site}. The Churchill silk was also included in the 1887 Jubilee Album {recorded as go161 on this site}. But these later versions have flowers woven across the bottom of the portrait - a feature lacking in the first issue of the 1885-6 period.
