Comments: | by Geoffrey Godden: Several silks were incorporated in the covers or mounts of calendars (the calendar part being printed on paper in the normal manner) and these cannot be classed as woven calendars. Nevertheless, the finest post-war Grant silk pictures have been especially woven to enhance these standard calendars. STATUE OF LADY GODIVA Other comments: The design was originally produced in about 1933 by Mr Thomas Donald Howes. He started with Grants in 1921 as an apprentice designer. The design shows the statue of Lady Godiva, then located in St. Mary's Hall, Coventry, with a stained glass window behind the statue. As noted by Godden above, this actual 1958 calendar was an adaptation of the original 1933 version, and is slightly larger in size. This same silk and card was also issued by Grant as a picture to be hung on the wall, and, with the exception of the actual printed calendar being omitted, is identical to this 1958 calendar. This picture version is recorded as gt474. reverse of this picture, showing 1958 calendar |
