Andrew Gilbert Wauchope, born in 1846, served as a midshipman in the navy in 1860 but transferred to the army, where he saw service in many countries and won regular promotion.
He commanded a brigade in the expedition for the reconquest of the Sudan and later commanded the Highland Brigade, under General Lord Methuen, in the Transvaal.
He was killed in action against the Boers at Magersfontein on 11 December 1899.

The short title THE LATE GENERAL WAUCHOPE was first listed on label 31+39a of 1901.
The silk portrait shows the face turned slightly to the left, with the wording 'A Scottish Hero' woven on a ribbon below the bust and with the full name woven below:

'Maj-Gen Wauchope, C.B.
(Killed in Action)
Magersfontein.
Dec 11th 1899'.

This silk appears to have been taken from a photograph by Horsburgh, reproduced in the first issue of The Sphere magazine of 27 January 1900.

Examples of this rare portrait are normally found on type E1 card-mounts.
