Empress Alix was born in Germany on 6 June 1872, the youngest daughter of the Grand Duke Louis IV of Hesse-Darnstadt. She married Nicholas II of Russia in November 1894 and changed her name to Alexandra. She was killed, with her husband and family, on 17 July 1918.

This extremely rare silk is shown above, and is a pair to Nicholas II [so218 on this site].

The wording below the portraits being a formal blessing on the lines of 'May God preserve Guard and Keep' with the date '1896'.

These portraits were first listed on label 31+29a under the joint name CZAR & CZARINA OF RUSSIA.
