Stephen Grover Cleveland, who was born on 18 March 1837, was Mayor of the City of Buffalo in 1882 and Governor of New York in the period 1883-5. He was President of the United States from 1885 to 1889, and again from 1893 to 1897.
In 1886 he married Frances Folsom. Mrs Cleveland is also depicted on a Stevens silk (as so210 on this site). The former President died on 24 June 1908.

The Stevens portrait silk depicts him facing half right, often but not always with the woven signature 'Grover Cleveland'.
The title was first included on label 23+26+2, of 1887 - but it does not occur on 31+29 or subsequent labels - and the back-label normally lists the American Presidents with leading Generals.
This silk is normally mounted on type C2 card-mount. This portrait and that of Mrs Cleveland were also mounted together on a card-mount bearing a printed advertisement for Allen & Ginters' Richmond Straight Cut cigarettes.

WARNING:
Please be advised that there are two versions of this portrait silk:
The Genuine Stevens silk has stars woven into the shield below the eagle.
It is known there is a second version of this silk without these stars - and it is believed this version is NOT a genuine Stevens.

The reverse of this silk has a printed label which is headed "Presidents of the United States", and proceeds to list all the Presidents up to Grover Cleveland, their dates of birth, ancestry and place of death.
Beneath this is a list of "Generals Commanding the United States Army", then "Wars of the United States" up to the Civil War.
Below this is a list of "The New Series of Silk Woven Portraits" available from the T. Stevens factory.
