Queen Alexandra, born on 1 December 1844, the daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark, was married to the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VII of England) on 10 March 1863, and the beautiful princess quickly won the hearts of the populace. Queen Victoria died on 22 January 1901, and the new King and Queen were crowned on 9 August 1902. Queen Alexandra, who died on 20 November 1925, survived her husband by fifteen years.

On this royal portrait silk, which was registered at the Patent Office on 30 March 1901, the registration number 372130 is usually woven near the right-hand side of the picture, but the early runs - issued in February and March 1901 - lack this detail and may have a stamp on the back of the card-mount reading 'Registration applied for'.

Along with its pair, KING EDWARD VII [so232 on this site], this silk was first listed on label 31 +39a. Her Majesty had earlier been featured as the Princess of Wales [see so544 and so550 on this site.].

The subject is also found in postcard form; and as with other popular subjects, the Queen was also featured in W. H. Grant's silk pictures.
